Indians Sweep Holmes on Sophomore Day
The Indians swept Holmes on Sophomore Day, beating the Bulldogs 7-2 in Game 1 and 8-2 in Game 2.
FULTON, Miss. - The Indians swept Holmes on Sophomore Day, beating the Bulldogs 7-2 in Game 1 and 8-2 in Game 2.
"We were really happy to honor our sophomores," said Coach Slater Lott. "This is a really important group to me personally and I will always be indebted to them."
Game 1: Indians 7, Holmes 2
ICC scored first in the opening inning when Cannon Graham singled to center to bring home Brody Thompson.
The Indians added to the lead in the fourth when Jack Cummings hit a solo home run to left on a full count.
ICC stretched the margin again in the fifth. Reid Kent hit a two-run home run to left to score Thompson and make it 4-0.
Holmes got on the board later, but ICC answered in the seventh. Madden Butler singled to center to score Thompson, then Graham doubled to right to bring home Butler and push the lead to 6-1.
The Indians added their final run in the eighth when Tyler Pickens lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score Tre Gunn.
Howell earned the win after allowing one unearned run on three hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked four.
Game 2: Indians 8, Holmes 2
Holmes took a 1-0 lead in the second, but ICC answered in the third.
Butler singled down the right field line to score Thompson and tie the game at 1-1.
The Indians took control in the fifth. Gunn singled home Butler to give ICC a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Howell lined a single to left to score Gunn and Graham and extend the lead to 4-1.
ICC added four more runs in the sixth.
Butler doubled to left to score Kent for a 5-1 lead. Butler later scored on a passed ball. Cummings then doubled to center to bring home Gunn and Will Caviness and make it 8-1.
Butler finished 4 for 4 in the nightcap with a double and three singles.
Williams got the win after allowing one run on eight hits in five innings. He struck out eight and walked one.
"I'm really proud of our team and really excited about the way we are playing right now," said Coach Lott. "We had two really good outings from our starters and really clean efforts out of the bullpen in each game. Offensively, I think we did a good job of stacking together quality at bats. Reid Kent had a big blow for us in the first game and Jack Howell had a really big hit in a tough situation in game two that really sparked us."
Up next, the Indians will host No. 4 Jones for the final home doubleheader of the season.
"We got a really good Jones team coming in on Saturday and we're excited to get after it and hope to contiue playing well."
