FULTON, MS – Itawamba Community College head football coach Sean Cannon released the Indians' 2014 football schedule on Friday.
ICC will look to build on their 2013 Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges (MACJC) playoff appearance with a season that will have a DI feel to it as the Indians will play five Saturday games this season.
"It's going to be a tough schedule," said Cannon. "Having these Saturday games kind of work in our favor by giving the guys a chance to get a long weekend before they have to come back and play another game that next week."
Cannon's inaugural season as head coach of the Indians will start with back-to-back road games against Copiah-Lincoln Community College (Aug. 28) featuring the 2013 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Defensive Player of the Year and a rematch from last year's MACJC semifinal game at Jones County Junior College (Sept. 6).
"The good thing is that our sophomores have been to both places," Cannon commented. "Both those teams are ranked in the Top 30 in the nation. I know they are going to have great squads and great coaching staffs so it will be a big challenge for us."
The Indians will open MACJC North Division play with their home opener against Holmes Community College (Sept. 11) for Military Appreciate Night before traveling to Senatobia to face Northwest Mississippi Community College (Sept. 20) for their second Saturday game of the season.
"We'll be looking forward to getting to play at home," said Cannon. "It's always a great night with it being the first home game along with it being the Military Appreciate Night before turning around going to take on a tough team at Northwest."
ICC will have a short week to prepare for defending NJCAA champion East Mississippi Community College (Sept. 25) before hitting the road against Coahoma Community College (Oct 4), who upset the nationally ranked Indians in double overtime last season in Clarksdale.
"You can't really hide anywhere in this league because you've got to lock it up and play good teams each week," Cannon said. "That [loss to Coahoma] was a tough one to swallow last year. We get a lot of really good teams to start this season so we are going to have to come out of the game pretty fast this year."
After back-to-back trips to Booneville, the Indians will host the rival Tigers of Northeast Mississippi Community College (Oct. 9) for the second-straight year before closing the regular season with back-to-back Saturday tilts at Mississippi Delta Community College (Oct. 18) and hosting Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College (Oct. 25) for Homecoming.
"The Northeast game is always a huge game for us and the school," Cannon said. "The last two weeks of the season being two Saturday games will feel more like a four-year atmosphere the way we will set practice up, but we are excited about the season because it will be here before you know it."
