Indians fall to Gulf Coast in home opener, 37-13

FULTON, Miss. – The ICC football team dropped a 37-13 decision to Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in its home opener on Thursday. The Bulldogs scored 24-unanswered points to pull away from the victory.
Gulf Coast (1-1, 0-0 MACCC South) scored on its opening possession of the night when Xavier Evans scored on a 6-yard run. The Indians (0-2, 0-0 MACCC) answered on the ensuing possession when Zae Davis (Biggersville) hauled in a 47-yard pass to set up Eric Watts (Opelika, Ala.) for a 19-yard touchdown toss from Red Parker (Houston).
Watts had four catches for 38 yards and a score and carried the ball seven times for 19 yards.
The Bulldogs took a 28-7 advantage into the break after a pair of touchdown passes from Pat McQuaide and another scoring run from Evans.
The Indians held Gulf Coast to a 31-yard field goal to start the third quarter. Parker was able to spin away from pressure and sprint into the end zone to make it a 31-13 contest after a failed extra point attempt. McQuaide added his third touchdown pass of the night in the final frame to make it a 37-13 game after a missed extra point.
Parker completed 11 of 16 passing for 144 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 73 yards on 18 carries and a touchdown in first collegiate start. Davis hauled in three catches for 85 yards.
Darryen Hobbs (Olive Branch) had 13 tackles with 2 assists and 2 forced fumbles. Dominique Taylor (Olive Branch) added 10 tackles with one tackle for a loss of four yards. Antravian Smith (Southaven) recovered a fumble to go along with 2 tackles, 4 assists with an assist on a tackle for a loss of two yards.
The Indians will be back in action Thursday night when they host rival Northeast (1-1, 0-0 MACCC North) to open division play. The Tigers dropped a 20-13 decision to Pearl River (2-0, 0-0 MACCC South) last week. The First American National Bank opening kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Eaton Field. The game will be available on SuperTalk 101.9 FM and LetsGoICCTV.com/red starting with the Davis Ford Pregame Show at 6 p.m.
