Indians Complete Historic Comeback to Top No. 12 East Mississippi
Down 17–0 to No. 12 East Mississippi, ICC refused to blink. And when the smoke cleared, a packed house at Eaton Field witnessed a 34–24 comeback that soon will not be forgotten.
FULTON, Miss. – The Indians didn't just win a football game Thursday. They walked into a moment that defines programs.
Down 17–0 to No. 12 East Mississippi, ICC refused to blink. And when the smoke cleared, a packed house at Eaton Field witnessed a 34–24 comeback that soon will not be forgotten.
For the first time since 2005 and 2006, ICC (2-2, 1-1 MACCC North) pieced together back-to-back wins over EMCC (2-2, 1-1). The rivalry has long tilted toward the Lions, but the Indians flipped the script and did it with authority.
East Mississippi dictated the first half.
The Lions opened with a touchdown drive, added a field goal, and then landed a gut punch when Noreel White (Moss Point) broke loose for an 83-yard punt return to take 17–0 lead in the second quarter. Eli Burciaga (Corinth) drilled a 28-yard field goal to put the Indians on the board with less than two minutes left in the first half.
The third quarter turned the game.
Mykel Allen (Batesville) capped a 75-yard drive with a two-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 17-10. Two possessions later, Deljay Bailey (Petal) went deep to Nate Branch (Hopkins, S.C.), who slipped coming out of his break but adjusted from the ground to secure a 33-yard touchdown catch.
The game was tied at 17 and the momentum belonged to the Indians.
Burciaga drilled a 48-yard field goal to give ICC its first lead, 20-17. Bailey connected with Branch again for a 48-yard touchdown to make it a two-score contest. Allen's second score, a six-yard run, finished off a stunning 31-0 swing.
Allen finished with 124 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. Branch caught six passes for 122 yards and two scores. Bailey completed 18 of 24 passes for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
Defensively, ICC turned in one of its most complete efforts of the season.
The Indians held the Lions to just 33 rushing yards on 22 carries. Amir Scarver (Douglasville, GA) led the charge with eight tackles, including a sack and two tackles for loss. Jaiden Dilworth (Tupelo) added seven tackles and broke up two passes. Adarion Patton (Knoxville, TN) finished with six stops.
East Mississippi managed a late touchdown to cut the margin, but the outcome had already been decided.
Up next for the Indians is a trip to Moorhead to face the Mississippi Delta Trojans (0-4, 0-1 MACCC North). The Guaranty Bank kickoff is set for 7 p.m., with the Metro Ford Pregame Show starting at 6:30 on SuperTalk 101.9 FM and LetsGoICCTV.com/red.
