Fulton, Miss. – Although it was second game of the season for the Itawamba Community College men's soccer program, Friday's game against No. 5 Pearl River Community College felt more like a playoff game.
It was a battle from the opening whistle to the 90th minute but the visiting Wildcats emerged victorious with a 2-1 win.
The Indians (1-1) fell behind 1-0 seventh minute, but had a chance to net the equalizer as Ian Thomas (Southaven) beat the Wildcat keeper, but was unlucky as the ball bounced off the cross bar.
One minute later, the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead and held it until the 83rd minute when Bill Gipp (London, England) score on a penalty kick after Maryo Elsheikh (Bartlett, Tenn.) drew a foul inside the box.
In the closing minutes and even seconds, the Indians had chances to net the equalizer, but the comeback came up just short in the hard fought battle.
Next up for the Indians is another Top 20 battle with No. 20 Mineral Area College Sunday.
-Editor's Note(8/29/22)
The game with Mineral Area was cancelled due to poor field conditions after heavy rain in the women's game, and Tuesday's game against Andrew College has been cancelled. The Indians next game will be Friday, Sept. 2 against Bethel University in Fulton at 2:30 p.m.
