FULTON, MS -- Sophomore Laure Lewis' fourth-inning grand slam proved to be the difference in the Lady Indians' Game 2 5-2 North Division win over the Holmes Community College Lady Bulldogs to complete the sweep on Saturday.
"That was a big hit for us," said ICC head softball coach Andy Kirk. "We hadn't really been doing much with the bats and that hit really gave us the shot of life we needed to get things going."
Lewis' (Mooreville) first home run of the season opened up a scoreless ballgame before ICC took a 5-0 in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Ashley Camp (Amory) scored on a double to right by freshman Catherine Carver (Hernando).
Holmes battled back with a pair of runs in the sixth on an RBI double by Charneissa Gordon and a sacrifice fly by Kaityly Hicks.
Freshman Montana Hawkins (Sulligent, AL) allowed one earned run, four hits and two walks while striking out four in six innings of work to pick up her third win of the season.
"I feel like Montana is starting to find her comfort zone on the collegiate level," Kirk commented. "She seems to stay cool, calm and collected every time she's in the circle and the defense has been playing extremely well behind her too."
Sophomore Dani Taylor (Myrtle) sealed the deal for the Lady Indians with a three up, three down seventh inning to help the Lady Indians swept their MACJC North Division opener.
"We needed a bulldog to come in and close the game out and that's exactly what Dani is for us," Kirk said. "She came in and had the batters on their heels from the first pitch and got a quick three up, three down inning that we needed to close the deal."
Camp and fellow sophomore Jessi Patterson (Nettleton) had a pair of hits while Camp, Anna Holley (Columbus) and Taylor Seiler (Calhoun City) each had a stolen base in the win.
ICC improves to 6-5-1 overall and 2-0 in North Division play.
