PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. – Maddie Porter picked a pretty good day to play the hero.
On her birthday, Porter delivered the tying swing in the sixth and the go-ahead swing in the seventh as No. 12 ICC stayed perfect at 4-0, edging Pensacola State (2-5) 4-3 in the second game of the Visit Panama City Beach JUCO Softball Showdown.
ICC struck first in the top of the opening inning. Victoria Fields came home on Porter's sacrifice fly, then AB Marlar followed with a solo homer to left to make it 2-0 before the Pirates settled in.
Pensacola State answered with a run in the second and then flipped the game with two more in the third, moving in front 3-2 and holding that edge into the late innings. Ella Lilly got the start for the Indians and worked three and one-third innings, allowing seven hits and three runs while striking out two and walking three.
That is where Porter took over.
In the top of the sixth, Porter launched a solo home run to tie it at 3-3 and reset the game with three outs left. One inning later, she came through again, doubling to left to bring home Fields with the go-ahead run and give the Indians their first lead since the first. Porter finished 2-for-3 with three RBIs, and she and Fields had two hits apiece.
Behind it, Ramsey Montgomery slammed the door. Montgomery (2-0) earned the win with three and two-thirds scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit while striking out eight and walking none as ICC made the late runs stand and closed out the 4-3 win.
