PENSACOLA BEACH, Fla. – No. 12 ICC swung back early and kept fighting late, but No. 3 St. Johns River State closed the weekend with too many answers, handing the Indians a 6-3 loss in the finale of the Visit Panama City Beach JUCO Softball Showdown.
The Vikings struck first with a run in the bottom of the first, then ICC flipped the script in the second. Taylar Shands turned on a pitch and drove a two-run homer to center to put the Indians in front 2-1.
St. Johns answered right away. A solo shot in the bottom of the second tied it, and the Vikings moved back in front in the fourth on an RBI single to make it 3-2. The game broke open in the bottom of the fifth when St. Johns pushed three more across to stretch the lead to 6-2.
ICC got one back in the sixth when Ella Duhon launched a solo home run, cutting it to 6-3, but the Indians could not string together the next hit to make it a one-run game.
Ramsey Montgomery (2-1) took the loss after allowing six runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks while striking out 10.
ICC heads home to open the home schedule Wednesday against Jackson State (Tenn.). The Guaranty Bank opening pitch for Game 1 is set for 1 p.m.
