GARDENDALE, Ala. - The No. 12 Indians set the tone in JUCO Turf Wars Game 1 with a no-hit performance in the circle and back-to-back insurance homers to secure the win.
Lizzie Meeks authored the headline, spinning a complete-game no-hitter as the Indians beat Calhoun 4-1. Calhoun's only run came without a hit, and even that window slammed shut fast.
Both sides traded zeros early until ICC finally cracked the scoreboard in the middle innings. Maddie Porter lined a double that brought home Victoria Fields and Macie Starling, turning a scoreless game into a 2-0 Indians lead and flipping the pressure squarely to the Warhawks.
Calhoun pushed across a run in the bottom of the sixth after a walk and a sacrifice bunt trimmed it to 2-1, but ICC answered immediately and answered with power. In the top of the seventh, Starling and Porter went back-to-back with solo home runs to stretch the lead to 4-1 and take the air out of any comeback thought.
Meeks finished it with the kind of closer's edge you want in a tournament. After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the seventh, she struck out three straight to end it, sealing the no-hitter with eight punchouts and two walks.
At the plate, Starling and AB Marlar each collected three hits as ICC stacked up 11 hits on the day. Porter and Starling doubled and homered, giving the Indians the extra-base damage to match Meeks' work in the circle.
