No. 11 Indians Drop Two to Shelton State
No. 11 ICC ran into a tough day at home against Shelton State on Tuesday, dropping both games of a doubleheader as the Buccaneers pulled out a late 6-4 win in Game 1 and took the nightcap 12-7.
FULTON, Miss. - No. 11 ICC ran into a tough day at home against Shelton State on Tuesday, dropping both games of a doubleheader as the Buccaneers pulled out a late 6-4 win in Game 1 and took the nightcap 12-7.
The Indians had chances in both games and got big swings at key moments, but Shelton State answered late in each one to leave Fulton with the sweep.
Game 1: Shelton State 6, No. 11 Indians 4
ICC stayed in the game deep into the opener, but Shelton State took control in the seventh to steal a 6-4 win.
The Indians got on the board in the first when AB Marlar grounded out to bring home a run. ICC added another in the second when an error extended the lead to 2-0.
Shelton State stayed within reach and then Itawamba created breathing room in the fifth when Kaylin Lynch homered to left for two runs, pushing the Indians in front 4-1.
But the game turned in the top of the seventh. Shelton State scored five runs on four hits to flip the score and move in front 6-4, and ICC could not answer in the bottom half.
Game 2: Shelton State 12, No. 11 Indians 7
The nightcap had offense on both sides, but Shelton State used middle-inning separation to take a 12-7 win.
Shelton State scored first in the top of the first, but Marlar answered in the bottom half with an RBI single to center to tie it at 1-1.
Shelton State moved back in front 3-1 in the second and added another run in the third, but ICC answered again. Marlar homered to right in the bottom of the third to tie the game at four.
Shelton State broke the tie in the fourth with a two-run double, then added another run on a single to stretch the lead to 8-4. The Buccaneers added more separation in the fifth with a grand slam to center.
The Indians answered with one more surge in the bottom of the fifth when Taylar Shands homered to left for three runs, but Shelton State held on from there.
Marlar drove in four runs on two hits to lead ICC in Game 2. Dossey, Marlar, Shands and Fields each collected two hits for the Indians.
