No. 11 ICC came out swinging and rolled to a run-rule win in Game 1 before Calhoun answered in Game 2 to split Saturday’s doubleheader with the Indians.
DECATUR, Ala. — No. 11 ICC came out swinging and rolled to a run-rule win in Game 1 before Calhoun answered in Game 2 to split Saturday's doubleheader with the Indians.
Game 1: No. 11 ICC 16, Calhoun 1 (5 innings)
ICC wasted no time putting this one on tilt.
The Indians erupted in the top of the first and never looked back. Kaylin Lynch and Gracyn Snell each delivered RBI singles, an error brought home two more, Taylar Shands added an RBI single, Victoria Fields ripped a two-run double and AB Marlar drove in another run with a single as ICC broke the game open in the opening frame.
Then Shands went back to work.
She drove a three-run homer to left in the second to stretch the lead, then added another RBI with a walk in the third as the Indians kept the pressure on. Shands finished with five RBI on two hits and reached base multiple times in a monster opener.
ICC racked up 16 hits in the win. Marlar led the hit parade by going 3-for-3, while Dossey, Snell, Lynch and Fields each had multiple hits.
Alanee Wheeler handled the circle for the Indians and earned the win, allowing four hits and one run, which was unearned, over five innings. She struck out one and walked one.
Game 2: Calhoun 11, No. 11 ICC 3
Calhoun flipped the script in the nightcap and ICC could not match the Warhawks' push after the middle innings.
The Warhawks struck first with a solo homer in the second, but Shands answered in the top of the third with a solo shot to left to tie it at 1-1.
Calhoun regained control in the bottom half of the third with a pair of RBI singles and stayed in front from there.
ICC got two runs back in the fifth when Marlar launched a two-run homer to left, but the Indians could not close the gap the rest of the way. Marlar finished 2-for-3 in Game 2.
