No. 13 Itawamba Drops Region 23 Opener to No. 6 Jones

POPLARVILLE, Miss. - The No. 13 Indians started fast but could not hold off No. 6 Jones College on Sunday, falling 6-2 in the opening round of the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament at Pearl River Community College.
ICC struck first in the top of the first when AB Marlar doubled to left field, scoring Victoria Fields and moving Maddie Porter to third for a 1-0 lead.
Jones answered in the third. A double down the left-field line tied the game before a sacrifice fly to center gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead.
ICC pulled even in the fourth after Ella Duhon scored on a groundout by Ann Thomas Luke, tying the game at 2-2 and putting the Indians back in position.
Jones broke through in the fifth with the play that changed the game. With one runner on, Fields made robbed a home run at the left-field fence but collided hard with the wall, causing her glove to come off and fall over the fence. The play resulted in a two-run home run that gave Jones a 4-2 lead.
The Bobcats added another run later in the fifth on an RBI single to right and stretched the lead to 6-2 in the sixth with a single to left.
ICC will now move into an elimination game against No. 20 Northeast at 4 p.m. With a win, the Indians would advance to play at 7 p.m. against the loser of No. 5 Pearl River and Jones.
