POPLARVILLE, Miss. - No. 14 Itawamba put itself in position early Monday, but No. 20 Northeast rallied late and edged the Indians 11-8 in eight innings in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament at Pearl River Community College.
ICC built a 7-1 lead through two innings and led 8-6 going to the seventh before Northeast tied the game and pushed across three runs in the eighth.
Northeast struck first on a solo home run in the top of the first, but the Indians answered immediately with a five-run bottom half. AB Marlar delivered the big swing of the inning, doubling to center to score Maddie Porter, Alana Dossey and Emarie Boddie for a 3-1 ICC lead.
The Indians kept the inning moving when Ann Thomas Luke singled to bring in Marlar. Gracyn Snell later reached on a fielder's choice that scored Kailyn Lynch and pushed the lead to 5-1.
ICC added two more runs in the second. Ella Duhon doubled to center to score Porter, and Lynch followed with a groundout that brought in Marlar to make it 7-1.
Northeast worked its way back into the game, cutting the deficit to one before Porter gave ICC another lift in the fourth with a solo home run to left. The homer stretched the Indians' lead to 8-6 and gave ICC a chance to close it out late.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of the seventh on a two-run home run to center, forcing extra innings with the score even at 8-8.
Northeast completed the rally in the eighth, breaking the tie with a three-run single to move in front 11-8. The Indians could not answer in the bottom half.
